Story
For more than twenty years, we watched Uluwatu change. The island she first knew for its wild landscapes, quiet villages and unhurried rhythms has become increasingly developed, sophisticated and fast-moving. With that change came much to celebrate, but also the gradual disappearance of something harder to define: a sense of stillness, restraint and connection to place. Jati was born from a simple question: in a Bali that is moving ever faster, could we create a house that chose to stay grounded? Not as a rejection of change, but as a deliberate response to it—a place to slow down, pay attention, think clearly and experience Bali differently.
Designed by Sidarta & Sandjaja, with interiors by Michelle Arderia of BUD Studio, Jati translates that idea into architecture and experience. Dark teak, stone, shadow and carefully framed views create a house that feels tactile, intimate and deeply rooted in its surroundings. Its rituals and practices—from ikebana and incense to Go, taichi and sound—are not activities added to a stay, but invitations to notice, engage and make deliberate choices. Jati is ultimately an experiment in a different kind of hospitality: one that asks not how far you can escape, but how deeply you can arrive.
Objects
Madeem Linen
Curating the feeling against the skin. The crisp sound of fresh sheets, the soft ruffle of linen, the smell of clean fabric as you press your face into it — these are small sensations, but they shape how a room is remembered. That is why Jati partnered with Madeem, an artisanal linen brand born in Bali in 2018, whose approach to everyday textiles feels aligned with the house. All of Jati's bed and bath linen is thoughtfully made by Madeem. Put on the bathrobe, nothing underneath, and sleep.
Matcha
Take your time. Sieve the matcha. Whisk it slowly. Swirl the bowl. Pour. Taste. Notice the foam, the texture, the umami, the bitterness, the sweetness.
The set was made in Bali, paired with a beautifully sculpted kettle carried home from China. There is nowhere you need to be.

It began with movement — letting colour flow, following one mark with another — and became an exercise in restraint. At some point, adding more stops making the painting better.
Knowing when to stop. Knowing when it is enough. Knowing that more is not always better.
Teak, chosen for weight
Michelle Arderia's interiors for Jati begin with a deliberately restrained material palette, with solid teak carrying much of the visual and physical weight of the house. Furniture was designed to feel grounded and enduring rather than decorative: sculptural forms, substantial timber and stepped bases that sit firmly within the architecture.
And as the teak darkens, wears and develops its own marks, it becomes increasingly part of the house rather than something placed inside it.
Banana Scroll
Light made from what the forest leaves behind.
The banana-paper blinds in the living room were curated through Jia Collective, working with Greenman Banana Paper Studio in Bali. The studio was founded by Japanese papermaker Kiyoshi Naruse, who began experimenting with banana paper in Bali in the late 1990s.
The Low Lantern
Why is the light so close to the table?
The dining room at Jati is deliberately low-seated, bringing the body closer to the floor and changing the relationship between people, food and space. Rather than illuminating the entire room from above, the handmade resin lantern hangs close to the table, creating a smaller pool of light around the people gathered there.
